There are two types of eating out. The first is a formal, well planned, pre-booked "make-up & perfume" affair, with babysitters organised and a sense of expectation hanging in the air. The second kind is a random Thursday, 'we have the crowd together but we have nothing in the house where shall we go' impromptu night out.
And so, if you’re lucky and the stars align and it’s a perfect Jo’burg summers evening and you arrive at Il Giardino to a full courtyard with fairy lights strung up in the olive trees, the latter becomes the former, just all the more special because it was so unplanned.
