When in Provence ..... Farmer's Markets

A marché paysan in Provence is atmospheric, colourful and just plain fun. It is a food market where local farmers sell their produce. Many of the vendors travel from market to market, so you may see the same vendor at different markets during a week. Usually a small town will have one market a week that starts at around 08:00 in the morning and continues until around 13:00. Your “finds” at the market will depend entirely on what is growing in Provence at that time of the year. When we visited, we were just in time for the melons from Cavaillon (we had one every single day of our trip!) and the beautiful juicy red cherries from Apt. To choose from the country breads, goats cheeses, herbs, olive oils, honey and jams, all ready to be packed into your weaved basket, must surely be one of the most delightful ways to spend a morning in Provence.

“To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.”
Bill Bryson
