Drizzle and Dip
I recently purchased a new cookbook (hey, you do not have to be a good cook, or even a bad cook for that matter to have a compulsion to buy new ones before you even tried a recipe from your previous purchase!) The book is called Drizzle and Dip and is based on Cape Townian Samantha Linsells’ popular food blog of the same name. The recipes in the book are divided into three chapters based on food eaten at particular times of the day: Morning, Noon and Night. Samantha is a food stylist, so the images in the book are all very enticing. I am a huge fan of the dark backgrounds with vintage props that she uses for her food photography. Her blog is lovely!

Parisian inspiration by Carla Coulson
My family is a particularly close one. When we’re all together for Christmas, no one can go quiet for five minutes without being asked “are you in a mood?” There’s none stop talking and everyone knows everyone else’s secrets. Really, it’s kind of scary. So with my baby brother in Paris, there comes a time when Skype, even video Skype, or Facetime just won’t do the trick. I need to go and see him to ask him in person, every five minutes: “are you in a mood…?” And so off to Paris it is!
To get into the spirit, I’ve done a whole lot of ‘Paris-y’ things: read The Paris Wife, rented the Midnight in Paris DVD, dusted off and re-read the old copy of Peter Mayle’s trilogy about life in Provence. And - I paged through my collection of coffee table books, noticing that I seem to have a soft spot for those photographic books by someone who bought some house somewhere in France.
That includes a story about an extraordinary photographer who lives in Paris. I first fell in love with Carla Coulson and her beautiful photography when I read her book, Italian Joy. She is an Australian woman that gave up her successful corporate job to move to Florence to study Italian. After a while she enrolled in a photography school, met the obligatory Italian boy along the way and a new career and a new life was born. She moved to Paris and wrote the book, Paris Tango. I love the book because her writing is fabulous, giving us more than the photos that are already so beautiful that the images would have been enough anyway. She brings to life the Moulin Rouge backstage, artists' ateliers, haute couture shows and the private lives of Parisians.
She is also the photographer responsible for two other books on my bookshelf, so as you can see, I am a huge fan! Her daily blog is filled with beautiful images that she created or with all things photography than interests her. Well worth the read.

Jamie Beck and her incredible photography
My own blog looked a bit like a bachelor’s cupboard two days before payday this week, so I decided to share with you someone else’s blog that I love and read on a daily basis (read also about the previous blog I shared with you here).
Jamie Beck is a New York-based fashion photographer and she is the force behind a very popular photo blog named From Me To You on tumblr. On the blog she shares projects that she is working on, creating this amazing archive of her work for all of us to indulge in. She has a few interesting themes on her blog, including “Dinner and A Movie” where she posts recipes and photographs the entire process, a “24 hours in” section featuring the beautiful places where her work takes her and gorgeous house features. Her pictures of Paris and New York are beautiful, but it is her black and white photography that I find breathtaking. Really, I mean exactly that. Every day, just before I open her blog I find myself holding my breath in excited anticipation. She is amazing.

She is also creating a bit of a revolution in photography. Together with her fiancé, Kevin Burg, a web designer with a background in video and motion graphics, they took animated GIF photography to a new level. Basically, what it means is that they add motion to a still image by animating one object in the picture. They started making these incredible images in 2011 and coined the term “cinemagraph”.

She had us hello
It’s time again to share with you one of my favourite blogs. Its called “She had us at hello”. What a cool name for a blog?!
The blog is written by a South African girl married to an Aussie. The two live in London with their one year old daughter. The blog started as an online diary of their lives from day 1 of little Limi’s life, to keep the grandparents back home and friends connected to their daughter’s life.
Now, you may of course ask why on earth I would be interested in the daily life of someone I do not know? Fair question. The answer lies in Dee’s photography, but also in something more ethereal – Dee has a knack for noticing the magical and unusual within the most mundane things, and she manages to bring her life, well, to life! Through her I’m reminded how lovely it can be to be a tourist in your own town. Her eye for design, her ability to see and capture the beauty in something almost ramshackle and present it to us as chic inspires me.
Sometimes other people’s travel photos wakes up the “must-travel-immediately-bug”, but her photos of their travels especially in Europe leaves me quite happy and contented to be just an armchair traveller getting a glimpse into beautiful places and beautiful people’s lives!
I love to visit the blog and I always leave inspired!! Thanks Dee.

Adri Meyer Photography
My sister has a few weddings under her photography belt. My new brother-in-law is a professional sports photographer. Add to that my brother who also makes his living behind a camera and you see why I feel like the” mik-en-drukker” in the family :-).
Now, if two photographers get married, you can take my word for the fact that that their photographer friends make up more than just one table at the wedding reception. One of the impressive collection of photographers at my sister’s wedding was her friend (and I am glad to say now also mine!), Adri Meyer. Adri’s task on the day was to capture the whole “getting dressed” part of the wedding. Now, even though she was a friend of the bride, what struck me about her immediately is that, going about her business of making sure the light, angles and poses are just right, she adds something to the occasion. It took me a while to figure out what, but then it struck me – she likes her subjects and she has a winning way about her personality that adds to the joy of the occasion, rather than just acting as an impersonal documenter of the proceedings.

Adri studied Value and Policy Studies at the Stellenbosch University. She went on to become a Fashion Buyer and only recently left her corporate job to become a full time photographer. Looking at the photos below, you will agree with me that she found her true calling. I love her work, I love her blog and seeing the way that she translates her passion into images really inspires me.
