It’s been ages since we’ve been to Braamfontein and this past weekend we decided to go for a brunch in the area. We ended up in front of the bright green building in De Beer street that houses Daleah’s, a popular eatery. Inside we found a lovely, cosy interior with face brick walls, wood tables, art works on the walls and an oversized daily-menu chalkboard. We had french toast and crumpets and very good coffee. A good start to the weekend.

Citizen Cafe in Blairgowrie
Over the weekend, we packed the kids into the car for a coffee break at the Citizen Café in Blairgowrie. It was all the bicycles parked outside the café while driving down Conrad road that first drew my attention. With the café so close to Delta Park and the Braamfontein Spruit, it seems that many cyclists are in need of a caffeine fix when they get to that part of the route!
Both the décor of the café and the atmosphere inside is very appealing. The walls are covered in wallpaper depicting the cityscape. Vinyl records are playing in the background. The waiters are laid back and friendly. It looks like a great community café and I am sure the Blairgowrie residents must just love it. In that sense it reminds me of the Whippet in Linden or Butter in Berario, and I think every little village in Johannesburg must have one of these – a good local hangout.

Butter in Berario
From time to time the youth group at our church has cake sales to collect money for their activities. We usually make a beeline straight to the carrot cake baked by Janie Visser. So when we heard that Janie, together with her husband Pieter, opened a new coffee shop, showcasing her baking skills, this amounted to big news.
Butter is located in the small Berario shopping centre. The shop offers freshly baked cakes, including that famous carrot cake, breakfast quiches and daily specials as lunch offerings. The shop’s décor is charming with bright red enamel buckets as light fittings, colourful bunting and a fantastic wall feature with wallpaper depicting the multi-coloured houses of Burano.
On Saturday morning the four of us, in search of a decent cup of coffee, went to Butter. It has a wonderful neighbourhood feeling to it - the customers greeted each other and chances are very good that you will have had a chat with the owners before your cappuccino is done. For us, the decision Janie took to follow her dream after being a stay-at-home mum for 16 years means that we don’t have to wait for church events to have access to her talents, and that means that life is just that little bit brighter as a result.

Over the weekend, on our way to Hyde Park for a wee bit of shopping, we stopped at a coffee shop located on Jan Smuts Avenue for lunch. The location struck me as a bit odd – on the first floor of a very non-descript building on a busy street. But as soon as we walked into the large space, I knew that the owner made a brilliant choice. With large glass windows (with seating), the light streams into the space creating a very cosy, yet funky room. I love the décor. It is cement screed floors covered with Persian rugs, wooden chairs and tables, a sofa in the corner and fantastic weird turquoise walls. Add to that the imported and local newspapers, books, vinyl records and art prints on display (and for sale) and you can see why it attracts the hip crowd.
They serve breakfasts all day and lunch every weekday from 7:30am till 4:30pm and Saturdays from 8:30am till 1pm. By the way, my salad (pulled roast chicken with peas, onions, goat’s cheese and a honey and mustard vinaigrette) was just fabulous!

Doubleshot in Braamfontein
Braamfontein must surely be one of the coolest areas in Johannesburg at the moment, so much so that its ultra-cool lofts feature in decorating magazines and even in this Volkswagen ad. Juta street sits right at the heart of the action, and at the heart of Juta street is Doubleshot. It looks fantastic from outside. The great window seats looking out into the street seems the perfect place to do a bit of people watching while waiting for your coffee to be roasted.
The shop is a collaboration between a South African tea blender and the owner of a tea and coffee farm in Malawi. You will indeed find the Malawian products in the shop, but Doubleshot also stocks a variety of coffees and teas from around the world. They also pride themselves on their baristas’ fantastic reputation and latte art skills. If you look closely at the pic below of the cappuccino you will see a little heart right at the top of the cup. I was impressed. And even more so when I tasted my coffee. Great coffee, great location.
